Brief description of the report In 2010-2014, the volume of civilian arms sales in Thailand decreased by 12.3%: from 129.1 thousand units to 113.2 thousand units. One of the reasons for this is the high price. The bulk of the weapons are supplied to Thailand from the USA and China and are subject to heavy taxes.
At the same time, a large number of weapons are sold illegally in Thailand. The price of such weapons is often much more affordable. There are significant smuggling shipments of weapons from Malaysia. There is also evidence that a number of civil servants who have the right to buy weapons at a discount will subsequently sell them on the black market, declaring that the weapon has been lost. Thus, for some categories of the population of Thailand, the illegal acquisition of weapons may be a seductive alternative to their legitimate purchase.

During the last five years, there have been changes in the preferences of customers when they choose the type of civilian weapons they are acquiring. If in 2010, sales of smooth-bore and rifled weapons markedly outpaced sales of self-defense weapons, now self-defense weapons are the fastest growing segment of the civilian market in Thailand. Over the past five years, sales of this type of civilian weapons have almost doubled and amounted to 32.8 thousand units in 2014, or 29% of total sales. A significant advantage of a self-defense weapon in the eyes of buyers is its low price, as well as the fact that a license is not required to acquire most of its types.

It is estimated that in the period from 2015 to 2019, sales of all types of civilian weapons in Thailand will increase, but sales of self-defense weapons are the fastest. In 2019, they will exceed sales of rifled weapons and amount to 52.1 thousand units. The most represented segment of the market will remain smooth-bore weapons, the sales volume of which will be 60.4 thousand units.
