The market of pellets in Italy is characterized by a slow but progressive development. Although its volume is relatively insignificant, a significant increase has occurred mainly in the past four years - since 2004.
The Italian wood pellet market operates exclusively for domestic heating in the residential sector. Homeowners tend to purchase pellets in small bags (15 kg).
The pellet market in Italy has experienced rapid growth since the beginning of this millennium. According to pellets @ las, the annual consumption of pellets in Italy increased from 150,000 tons in 2001 to 850000 tons in 2008. However, this estimate is complex and other sources provide data of about 1 million tons per year.
Also, the production volume increased from 160,000 tons in 2001 to 650,000 tons in 2008. In Italy, there are a large number of small and medium-sized manufacturers, of which there are currently more than 90 companies. Among them, only twenty have annual production volumes exceeding 5,000 tons. Most of them began their activities using waste from their own sawmills as raw materials. Recently, there has been a shortage of raw materials and wood has to be imported as raw materials from the Balkans, Romania and Bulgaria. Large amounts of pellets are also imported from Austria and Slovenia.
