The world market of powdered milk is growing steadily. In 2009, 7.7 million tons of dry milk were produced in the world. The EU countries accounted for 23.6% of the total world production of milk powder, 14.5% for New Zealand, 14% for China and 10.5% for the United States. The European Union and China are leading not only in terms of production, but also in the amount of dried milk consumed.
In 2009, the dairy industry was actively developing in Asia, Latin America, as well as in the USA and New Zealand. The maximum growth of the market for powdered milk was recorded in Uruguay: sales there grew by 40% compared with 2008. Malaysia produced 37% more powdered milk than in the previous year. Production in Iran and New Zealand is increasing, with a market growth of 23% and 24.5%, respectively, compared to last year.
In 2009, sales of skimmed milk powder in the world increased by 5.7% compared to the previous year and reached 3.6 million tons. At the same time, sales of whole milk powder fell by 5.8% and amounted to 4.1 million tons .
The leader among milk powder exporters is New Zealand. Its share in the export of dry dairy products is 33%. The second place is occupied by the European Union with a share of world exports - 21.4%. Australia is also one of the world's top exporters of dry dairy products. In 2009, exports of milk powder from Australia grew by 36% compared with 2008 and reached 278.3 thousand tons. The share of Australian exports in the world market was approximately 9%. The factors that contributed to the growth of Australian powdered milk exports are the low level of stocks in the European Union countries and the increasing demand for these products in the countries of the Middle East and China.
