During 2006-2010, the gross harvest of fresh fruits in the world grew by almost 10%: from 555 to 608 million tons. The largest increase in the gross harvest of fruits compared to previous years was observed in 2008 - 4%. In 2006-2010, the largest volumes of fresh fruit in the world were collected in China. In the years under review, China’s share in the total gross harvest of fresh fruit in the world ranged from 30% in 2006 to 31% in 2010. However, despite China’s leadership in producing fresh fruit, in per capita terms, the volume of fresh fruit produced there is not large.
In 2006-2010, sales of fresh fruit in the world increased by 10%: from 505 to 555 million tons. The largest increase in sales compared to the previous year was observed in 2009 - almost 4%. BusinesStat estimates that in 2011-2015, sales of fresh fruit in the world will grow by an average of 2% per year. In 2015, the sales of fresh fruits in the world will reach 619 million tons. In 2006-2010, the largest sales in the world were melons and watermelons - about 22% of all fruit sales. Bananas accounted for an average of 16% of sales, apples and oranges accounted for 12% of each. In 2010, almost every third purchase of fresh fruits in the world was made in China (171.9 million tons). In India, almost 12% of all fresh fruits in the world were sold, and in Brazil - about 6%.
In 2010, Costa Rica (380.2 kg per year), Brazil (185.1 kg per year) and Iran (183.6 kg per year) were the leaders in the consumption of fresh fruit per capita among the countries of the world.
