In 2006-2010, the gross harvest of potatoes in the world grew by almost 9%: from 306 to 333 million tons. The largest annual increase in the gross harvest of potatoes compared to previous years was observed in 2007 - more than 5%, the smallest - in 2010 - less than 1% . In 2006-2010, the largest volumes of potatoes in the world were collected in China. China’s share in the total gross potato harvest in the world ranged from 18% in 2006 to 21% in 2010. Despite China’s leadership in potato production, in per capita terms, potato production in China is small.
In 2006-2010, sales of potatoes in the world increased by 6%: from 288 to 305 million tons. In 2010, every fifth purchase of potatoes in the world was made in China (almost 64 million tons). In India, almost 11% of all potatoes in the world were sold, and in Russia - about 9%. According to BusinesStat, it is expected that in 2011-2015, sales of potatoes in the world will grow by an average of 1.3% per year. In 2015, sales of potatoes in the world will amount to 326 million tons.
There are a number of factors causing the growth of potato sales in the world. Firstly, potato production is growing rapidly in developing countries and has great potential for further increase in production and consumption against the background of stable population growth. Secondly, potatoes are the main source of energy for the majority of the world's poor. Per unit of area, potatoes yield more yield in a shorter time and in a smaller area than any other crop. Thirdly, in addition to carbohydrates, potatoes contain the greatest amount of proteins compared to other root crops. It is rich in vitamin C and contains only 1 percent fat.
