Description
Description
In 2013-2017, global methanol imports grew by 6.9%: from 28.3 to 30.2 million tons. China is the largest importer. In 2017, it imported 7.7 million tons of methanol, which accounted for 25.5% of total world imports. The second place in terms of imports of methanol belongs to the United States: in 2017 they imported 2.5 million tons of products, or 8.4% of the total value of imports. The third position in the importers' ranking is taken by the Netherlands, which imported 2.4 million tons of methanol in 2017, which accounted for 8.0% of total world imports.
In 2014-2015, the volume of world imports of methanol showed a decrease, in 2016-2017 - growth. Changes in the volumes of methanol supply to the largest importing countries - China and the USA - had the greatest impact on the dynamics of the indicator. In 2014, the decline in the supply of products to China (by 0.5 million tons) and the United States (by 1.1 million tons) was a factor in the reduction of world imports. In 2015, global imports fell by 2.5%, influenced by a decline in shipments to the US by 1.3 million tons. In 2016, the main reason for the growth in world imports by 10.9% was an increase in methanol supplies to China by 3.3 mln tons at the same time, there was a decrease in shipments to China by 1.1 million tons and an increase in imports to the United States by 0.8 million tons.
For 2013-2017, the average world price of methanol imports decreased by 17.5%: from 386.0 to 318.4 dollars per ton. The value of the indicator decreased in 2015-2016, which was associated with a fall in oil prices during these years. Methanol prices are closely related to oil prices, as much of the demand for methanol is due to the demand for fuel, especially in China, the largest consumer and producer of methanol in the world.
According to BusinesStat, in 2018-2022, the natural volume of methanol imports will grow at a moderate pace - an average of 1.1% per year. In 2022, the figure will be 31.8 million tons, which will exceed the level of 2017 by 5.4%.
