From 2012 to 2016, sales of alumina in the world increased by 17.0%: from 97.6 to 114.2 million tons. Annually, the figure showed an increase from 2.1 to 7.3% compared to previous years. In this case, the smallest increase was observed in 2015, and the largest - in 2014.
In 2012-2016, China was the largest consumer of alumina in the world. In 2016, 63.4 million tons of this product was sold in the country, which corresponded to 55.5% of the global sales volume. The second place in consumption in 2016 was occupied by Russia with a natural indicator of 7.2 million tons, which accounted for 6.3% of total sales. The third place belonged to Canada, where 5.7 million tons of alumina were sold (5.0% of world consumption).
According to forecasts of BusinesStat, in 2017-2021 the market growth will continue at an average rate of 4.1% per year. According to the results of 2021, sales of alumina in the world will amount to 139.3 million tons, which is higher than the value of 2016 by 22.0%. Alumina is the raw material for the smelting of aluminum metal, in connection with which the dynamics of its sales in the global market for the aluminum industry will be consistently positive. Stimulate the growth of demand for aluminum will increase production consumers - producers of foil and packaging, cable industry, auto industry. In 2017-2021, the top three countries in terms of consumption of alumina are not expected to change. The leading position, far ahead of other countries, will continue to occupy China: in 2021, the country's share in total world sales will reach 60.1%. The second place in 2021 will remain Russia with a share of 5.7% of all sales, and the third place - Canada (4.5%).
