From 2012 to 2016, sales of newsprint in the world fell by 18.2%: from 30.6 to 25.0 million tons. Annually, there was a decrease in the figure from the previous year by 3.9-6.1%. The demand for newsprint in the world market has been falling for a long time due to the reduction in circulation, bandwidth, size of newspapers, closing of publishing houses and printing houses, which is a consequence of the digital revolution and the development of electronic media.
In the years under consideration, the USA was the largest consumer of newsprint in the world. In 2016, 3.15 million tons of this product was sold in the country, which corresponded to 12.6% of the global sales volume. The second place in sales in 2016 was occupied by Japan with a natural indicator of 2.91 million tons, which accounted for 11.6% of total sales. The third place belonged to China, where 2.89 million tons of newsprint were sold (11.6%). Note that in 2011-2015, China ranked second in sales of newsprint in the world; Japan overtook it only in 2016.
According to forecasts of BusinesStat, in 2017-2021, the fall in the global newsprint market will continue at an average rate of 3.2% per year. According to the results of 2021, sales will amount to 21.3 million tons, which is less than the value of 2016 by 14.9%.
In the forecast years, changes will occur in the structure of the newsprint market in the countries of the world. India will take the leading position: in 2021, the country's share in total sales in the world will reach 14.7% (in 2016 - 11.4%). The second place in 2021 will remain Japan with a share of 12.2% of all sales, and the third place - China (10.9%). In 2021, the United States will fall to fourth place among the countries of the world with an indicator of 10.8% of total sales.
