The polypropylene market suffered during the crisis years insignificantly compared with other chemical industry markets. According to experts, the basic polymer grade used in the manufacture of packaging material and products made of it was in high demand even in times of crisis.
In 2008-2012, China and the Netherlands were the leaders in sales of polypropylene in the world. During the period under review, China’s share in world sales averaged 18%, while the share of the Netherlands was about 10%. In 2013-2017, the demand for this polymer in China will grow faster than in other countries. So, in 2013, the share of China in world sales of polypropylene will be 19%, and in 2017 it will increase to 20%.
According to forecasts of BusinesStat, in 2017 polypropylene sales in the world will amount to 79 million tons, which will exceed the value of the indicator for 2012 by 36%. The market for polypropylene products is far from saturation. According to market experts, in the coming years, the greatest growth in demand for products is expected in the automotive segment, as replacing metal parts with plastic can significantly reduce the weight of the car (about 2 times), save fuel and achieve increased safety levels. Also a significant increase in demand is expected in all segments (packaging, spunbond, pipes, etc.).
