Description
In 2011-2015, oilseeds sales in the world increased by 11.4% and amounted to 621.6 million tons by the end of 2015. The growth in sales of oilseeds over the period was due to an increase in their consumption, primarily in the food industry. This is evidenced by a significant increase in soybean sales in recent years.
Soybean prevails in the structure of sales of oilseeds in the world: in 2011-2015, its share accounted for an average of 49.4% of total sales. Over the period, sales of soybeans increased from 271.5 million tons in 2011 to 321.3 million tons in 2015. The widespread use of soy in the food industry is due to the high content of protein, essential amino acids and vegetable fat. Soybean seeds are used to make soy flour, butter, milk, soy paste, tofu (bean curd), sauces and other products. Due to the high protein content, soy is used in the manufacture of meat substitutes for vegetarians.
Significant shares in oilseed sales were also occupied by cotton and rapeseed. Cotton accounted for an average of 16.5% of total sales for the period, while rapeseed accounted for 13.9%. At the same time, it is worth noting that the sales of rapeseed for 2011-2015 increased by 9.1 million tons, while cotton sales, on the contrary, decreased by 1.4 million tons.
According to the forecasts of BusinesStat, in 2016-2020 natural sales of oilseeds in the world will grow at a rate of 2.2-2.7% per year and in 2020 will amount to 700.9 million tons. Soybean will still prevail in the structure of sales of oilseeds.
